As a candidate advocate, I believe that you cannot over-market
yourself. When you are looking for a job, the more high quality
job offers, the better.
If you are unemployed, full-scale marketing is not even a question.
Fears of 'appearing desperate' are balderdash. Does Coca-Cola desperately
over-advertise? A fairer question is: "How would you over-market
a house for sale?" Yes, you can over-spend the 6% commission,
but you can't over-market the house. There is no scenario where
good intensive marketing is counter-productive to the sale.
If you are employed, the question of how much is too much to market
is also a non-issue. While you don't want to inform your employer
that you are looking, you hurt yourself far too much by just putting
your toe in the water and hoping to keep a secret. This strategy
severely limits your upside potential. Worse, it also drags out
the search duration increasing the risk that you tried to avoid.
Short intensive campaigns are best, whether you're currently working
or not.
Let me show you what I mean.
